Guarding the Queen

Guarding the Queen

They stand on guard outside Britain’s royal residences, resplendent in their bearskin hats and scarlet tunics, and thousands of tourists photograph them every year. But few foreign visitors, or even Brits, are aware that the Grenadier Guards is also the most senior infantry regiment in the British Army. The programme looks behind the scenes as the proud regiment protects the Queen at her palaces and guards the Crown Jewels at The Tower of London. There’s pomp in evidence when two musicians are inducted into the band regiment including new recruit Abbey Davis, only the fifth woman to join the Guards’ band. We also witness the training leading up to this prestigious role, where Capt Ollie Doherty leads a group of trainee guardsmen on an exercise in battlefield discipline in the Scottish Highlands. It proves a testing time with only four out of the 13 Grenadiers that started the course remaining.
